ULTIMATE LIVER PLUS WAS DEVELOPED BY DR. STAN GUBERMAN FOR HIS PATIENTS. PRESENTLY, LIVER SUPPLEMENTS ON THE MARKET TODAY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH INGREDIENTS THAT SPECIFICALLY AFFECT THE LIVER. NOW THE ULTIMATE LIVER PLUS HAS TWELVE INGREDIENTS SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED ON LIVER HEALTH. PLUS, THE ULTIMATE LIVER PLUS HAS THE HIGHEST POTENCY OF SILIMARIN PER CAPSULE OF ANY SUPPLEMENT ON THE MARKET TODAY.
MILK THISTLE:
Milk Thistle contains the chemical "silymarin" a super anti-oxidant which protects the liver from toxins and pollutants by preventing free radical damage. Silimarin Extract (Milk Thistle Seed) stimulates the production of new liver cells. It reduces toxicity and reverses liver damage caused by most prescription and over-the counter drugs, including, acetaminophen, Aspirin, nicotine, cholesterol-lowering drugs, chemotherapy drugs, psychotropic drugs, allergy drugs, blood pressure lowering drugs, and alcohol. It protects against pollutants such as carbon monoxide, pesticides and herbicides, by breaking them down from potentially lethal substances into those that are less destructive to the body. It has been used to treat liver disease, including hepatitis and cirrhosis. It improves blood platelet count and white blood cell count. It is believed to have an anti-cancer effect on both breast and prostate cancer. Silimarin Extract (Milk Thistle Seed) strengthens the heart and lungs; increases the flow of oxygen to the brain.
TAURINE:
Taurine helps maintain the health of another vital organ, your liver. It helps the cells in your liver work more effectively. This strengthens your liver's ability to eliminate harmful toxins from your body (Biol Pharm Bull 2002;25(9):1231-1233).
For this reason, many people take taurine after drinking alcohol, as it helps flush its toxic effects more quickly from your system.
L-GLUTATHIONE:
The liver is the major source of GLUTATHIONE levels in blood. It was found that GLUTATHIONE content in patients with hepatitis C was significantly reduced. This was interconnected with the severity of their liver disease and the ability of the hepatitis C virus to multiply. The GSH levels were found to be further more lowly in the cases of those who were HIV positive, compared to those with only hepatitis C. Patients addicted to drugs were the one's to have the lowest GSH levels.
Studies suggested that increased levels of glutathione helps to improve the response to interferon treatment in the cases with hepatitis. It was confirmed that oxidative stress occurred in patients with chronic hepatitis and the studies also showed that the levels of free radicals was correlated with the activity of the hepatitis.
In another study conducted in Italy, improved glutathione levels with high intravenous doses in patients with fatty livers, secondary to alcoholic hepatitis or viral hepatitis (B or C), were marked to show improvement in liver tests, which lasted for several months, after the GSH treatment.
It was found that there was a presence of free radicals due to oxidation of lipids in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Therefore it was concluded that oxidant stress contributes to the deterioration of the liver disease.
Studies made it clear that:
* Oxygen and other toxic free radicals, resulting from oxidative stress, occurred in chronic liver disease, which contribute to liver damage in various common types of chronic hepatitis. * Levels of antioxidants in blood and liver, mostly those of L-glutathione, are found to be lower in these patients compared to others. * Thirdly, higher levels of L-glutathione have shown to improve liver cell damage as reflected by standard liver tests. In chronic hepatitis C, increase of glutathione not only impairs Virus C replication but also renders interferon anti-viral therapy to be more effective.
The studies suggested that the futures of therapy of chronic hepatitis C are likely to include measures to decrease oxidative stress and injury, and the use of multi drug combinations, including inhibitors of hepatitis C virus.
PHOSPHATIDYL CHOLINE:
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a purified extract from lecithin and is one of the components of bile (it is required for normal transport of bile acids). Emulsifies and breaks down fat deposits in the body, which make it helpful in the prevention of gallstones, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and liver problems. Research has shown that Phosphatidylcholine is beneficial in depression, memory loss and neurological disorders. It is 3 times more potent than Lecithin
Phosphatidylcholine is one of the most important support nutrients for the liver. PC is a phospholipid, a large biological molecule that is a universal building block for cell membranes. A cell's membranes are its essence: they regulate the vast majority of the activities that make up life. Most liver metabolism occurs on cell membranes, which occupy about 33,000 square meters in the human. More than 2 decades of clinical trials indicate that PC protects the liver against damage from alcoholism, pharmaceuticals, pollutant substances, viruses, and other toxic influences, most of which operate by damaging cell membranes. The human liver is confronted with tens of thousands of exogenous substances. The metabolism of these xenobiotics can result in the liver's detoxicative enzymes producing reactive metabolites that attack the liver tissue. Dietary supplementation with PC ( with meals) significantly speeds recovery of the liver. PC has also been shown to be effective against alcohol's liver toxicity in well-controlled studies on baboons. PC has other qualities that enhance its usefulness as a dietary supplement. PC is safe, and is a safer means for dietary choline repletion than choline itself. PC is fully compatible with pharmaceuticals, and with other nutrients. PC is also highly bioavailable (about 90% of the administered amount is absorbed over 24 hours), and PC is an excellent emulsifier that enhances the bioavailability of nutrients with which it is co-administered. PC's diverse benefits and proven safety indicate that it is a premier liver nutrient.
N-ACETYL-CYSTEINE:
Because it is readily absorbed and rapidly metabolized to glutathione, N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is the glutathione building block most favored by healthcare practitioners. In the case of an acetaminophen overdose, NAC is administered by physicians to detoxify the drug before it destroys too many liver cells and becomes fatal. In addition, NAC has been shown to increase blood glutathione in HIV-infected patients with low levels of glutathione due to their chronic infection.
Despite the supportive literature, there have been few, large, well-designed trials advocating the use of NAC to retard liver disease. While the demand for more proof continues to grow, there are a few recently published trials:
· Published in the November 2006 journal Apoptosis, one such trial investigated whether NAC could prevent oxidative stress and inhibit liver cell death in fulminant hepatic failure. Based on an animal model, the researchers concluded that NAC demonstrates a hepatoprotective role for this severe type of liver failure.
· As published in the January 2008 journal Liver Transplantation, a retrospective study found that children treated with NAC for acute liver failure (not caused by acetaminophen poisoning) had a better outcome than matched controls not treated with NAC.
Since the hepatic cells of people with chronic liver disease have to fend off more than their share of waste and toxins, their cells’ glutathione levels drain quickly. Unfortunately, this depletion makes them more susceptible to the advancement of liver disease. When the liver is consistently insulted, the facts support NAC supplementation to replenish glutathione levels. Restoring glutathione levels is an effective way to refuel a person with liver disease’s ammunition, a replenishment that can help them defend against incurring any further liver damage.
