How does calcium support health?

• Calcium is essential to the normal transmission of nerve impulses. Calcium ions mediate many important cellular processes throughout the body including cells of the immune system, liver, nerves, blood vessels, and endocrine system. It also affects the processing of fats in the body, may reduce absorption of fats (lipids) by the intestines and can modulate gallbladder absorption.
• Calcium provides many additional benefits for women. Menopausal and post-menopausal women are at increased risk for bone loss that often leads to osteoporosis. Research suggests that women who take in adequate amounts of calcium throughout their lives greatly reduce their risk of excessive bone loss later in life. Calcium intake (at 1,000-1,200 milligrams per day for adults) from food and supplementation may support proper muscle function. For women, adequate calcium intake may also reduce monthly discomfort by helping to maintain the normal functioning of parathyroid hormone.

How does phosphorus support health?

• Phosphorus is involved in bone mineralization, energy production, and cell signaling. The kidneys and intestine regulate the concentration of phosphorus, which is required by almost every cell in the body for critical processes such as cell signaling, nucleic acid synthesis, maintaining energy balance, formation of cell membranes, and bone formation.
