- Bee propolis, also known as bee glue, is a brownish resinous substance collected by bees, mainly from poplar and conifer buds, and used to seal their hives. Because of its antimicrobial properties, propolis helps to keep the hive germ-free. Test tube and animal studies indicate that propolis may have the following actions: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antithrombotic, antiviral, anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. Bee propolis is believed to stimulate phagocytosis, the process by which some white blood cells destroy bacteria.
