White Tiger Decoction (bai hu tang) is a white powder that has been known in Traditional Chinese Medicine for nearly two thousand years, and has long been used to treat symptoms that we now associate with blood sugar regulation. The basic formula includes 4 ingredients: gypsum, anemarrhena root, licorice root, and rice. To these, the ancients occasionally added ginseng, an herb of nearly mythical qualities but traditionally very expensive and difficult to obtain.

Today, we know a little more about the role of these ingredients, but some of their actions have yet to be fully understood. Gypsum is calcium sulfate, and calcium helps to stabilize blood sugar.  Anemarrhena root has traditionally been used to help maintain and regulate energy levels and fortify the pancreas. Nonglutinous rice is credited by the Chinese to help restore the natural acid balance of both the blood and the intestinal tract. However, where the ancients sometimes used ginseng, we now use eleuthero root (often misnamed €œsiberian ginseng), which is both easier to grow and less expensive than its fabled Asian namesake, and better known for its effects in regulating metabolism and energy levels.
