How does flaxseed oil support health?Flaxseed is the richest plant source of the health-promoting omega-3 fatty acid known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).1 Flaxseed oil is derived from the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum (which means “very useful”). It is one of the oldest crops known to humanity and has been cultivated since the beginning of civilization.2 The use of flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil, to promote health has been mentioned in the works of Hippocrates, Qantes, and Dioscorides, as well as in medieval books on medicinal herbs in Asia and Europe.3
The ALA provided by flaxseed oil cannot be made by the human body.4 Consumption of flaxseed oil in a study of healthy older adults resulted in beneficial lipid profiles.5 Additional studies indicate that ALA from flaxseed supports heart health6 and increases levels of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, that promotes growth of new neurons and survival of existing neurons.7 In animal studies, dietary ALA reduces aggregation of platelets, resulting in improved blood flow.8*
