Horsetail is an herb that contains an abundance of natural silica. It has been used traditionally in Europe as a diuretic to treat edema (fluid retention). Horsetail has been used for the treatment of osteoporosis, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, wound healing, and kidney and bladder problems including bed-wetting and urinary incontinence and reduces urinary tract irritation. Horsetail also contains potassium, aluminum, manganese, and a variety of flavonoids. These flavonoids, as well as other substances found in horsetail, appear to provide this herb with strong diuretic effects which promote the loss of water from the body. This removal of buildup helps the kidneys eliminate waste and promotes them into action.
